Elon Musk and Sam Altman Back AI Development Slowdown
Elon Musk, Sam Altman and Dario Amodei call for a slower pace of AI development, citing escalating risks from advanced AI models.
Leaders of the world's biggest artificial intelligence platforms say it is time to slow the pace of development of their most advanced models, citing escalating risks, as Elon Musk and Sam Altman AI development caution takes hold across the industry, according to MyBroadband, citing Bloomberg. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a blog post Saturday announcing new safety measures, including third-party evaluators, and called on the industry to support a broader downshift.
OpenAI chief Sam Altman quickly pledged to adopt Amodei's suggestion of "independent evaluators with employee-like access." Elon Musk, who runs xAI, responded, "Dario is right," signaling agreement among three of the sector's most prominent leaders on a more cautious approach to advanced AI models.
The call for an AI development slowdown comes as OpenAI has also paused plans for a public listing this year, with Altman telling Fortune the company won't go public in 2026 as it focuses on safety-related concerns. The AI safety measures proposed by Amodei include third-party evaluators to assess AI systems independently, and Altman's endorsement suggests OpenAI may adopt a similar oversight structure.
