Lucknow Highway Projects Worth ₹4,850 Crore Boost Regional Connectivity

A series of road infrastructure projects valued at approximately ₹4,850 crore have been launched in Lucknow, with the Union and Uttar Pradesh governments highlighting plans to improve connectivity, reduce travel times and support economic growth across the region. The projects include the inauguration of the Lucknow–Kanpur Expressway and the announcement of additional highway upgrades, according to information shared during a public event attended by senior government leaders.

The programme, held in Lucknow on Monday, was attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari. During the event, leaders outlined ongoing and proposed transport projects that they said would strengthen the state's road network and improve access between major cities.

Among the key developments was the inauguration of the Lucknow–Kanpur Expressway, which is expected to improve travel between the two urban centres. Officials also laid the foundation stone for a 23-kilometre four-lane road connecting the Hardoi–Lucknow border with the Lucknow Ring Road. The project has an estimated cost of ₹541 crore. In addition, a one-kilometre four-lane flyover at the Engineering College intersection was also announced.

Speaking at the event, Gadkari said a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a proposed elevated road integrated with a metro corridor over Shaheed Path is expected to be completed by December. He said the project is intended to address future traffic demand in Lucknow, with construction expected to begin after the planning stage is completed.

According to the announcements made during the programme, the Lucknow–Sitapur Highway will also be widened to six lanes. A service road is planned along Kisan Path as part of the broader effort to improve traffic movement around the city.

Rajnath Singh described Shaheed Path as an important transport corridor for Lucknow and said the proposed elevated road and metro project would enhance urban mobility. He also said the widening of the Lucknow–Sitapur route is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the two cities while supporting future industrial development around the state capital.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said expanding transport infrastructure has become a major focus of the state government and described the Lucknow–Kanpur Greenfield Expressway as an important project for the development of the capital region. He also referred to other major infrastructure initiatives in Uttar Pradesh, including the Ganga Expressway and the upcoming Noida International Airport at Jewar, as part of a broader strategy to improve connectivity across the state.

Gadkari said highway projects worth between ₹50,000 crore and ₹60,000 crore are currently under development across Uttar Pradesh. He added that the proposed Shaheed Path elevated corridor would use advanced engineering methods and function as a multi-level transport facility designed to ease congestion in the years ahead.

The Union minister also highlighted several national highway projects under development in different parts of Uttar Pradesh, including road links connecting Lucknow with Gonda, Barabanki, Bahraich and other districts. These projects, he said, are intended to strengthen freight movement, improve regional connectivity and support economic activity.

Large-scale investment in highways and urban transport infrastructure has become a central part of the state's development strategy. Improved road links are expected to facilitate faster movement of people and goods, attract industrial investment and enhance connectivity between cities, industrial clusters and logistics hubs.

According to information shared during the event, the latest projects form part of ongoing efforts by the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh government to modernise transport infrastructure and accommodate future growth in traffic and economic activity. Further planning work on the proposed elevated corridor and other announced projects is expected to continue in the coming months.
