LUCKNOW — The controversy over alleged theft of donations at the Ram Mandir has become a political test for the BJP and its allied organizations, months ahead of Uttar Pradesh's 2027 assembly elections, with the party facing scrutiny over an episode critics say is of its own making.

The controversy began on June 5, 2026, when security guards reportedly caught temple employees with cash in their pockets. It deepened after a former kar sevak alleged on social media that gold bricks donated to the temple had gone missing. Trust officials Champat Rai and Anil Mishra resigned as suspicion mounted, and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's Special Investigation Team has since led to eight arrests based on its preliminary findings.

RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale said anyone found guilty after investigation must face severe punishment. UP Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana said questioning "corruption" in the temple's management put a question mark over the entire Hindu community, while clarifying he was not defending any wrongdoing.

The episode has emerged as an early test for opposition parties, particularly the Samajwadi Party and Congress, heading into the monsoon session of Parliament, where debate over the 131st Constitution Amendment Bill is also expected to resume.
