After his success with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the IPL 2024, Gautam Gambhir has been selected as India's head coach to replace Rahul Dravid. Alongside him, Gambhir brought two important support staff members with him. Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate, who both worked with Gambhir at KKR. However, now, both have left the Team India camp. 

Ten Doeschate is the latest one after he decides to quit the role of an assistant coach after a horrible UK tour. India lost 0-2 to Ireland before getting thrashed by England in both the T20I and ODI series. However, Ten Doeschate has contemplated his decision for quite some time now. Now, he has received the green light from the BCCI as well, with the third ODI at Lord's being his last day in the dressing room. 

Ryan ten Doeschate leaves Indian team for KKR

Ryan ten Doeschate, as per previous reports, was not dissatisfied with the role. In fact, his decision to leave the team is a cordial and a mutual one. However, it is reported that Doeschate wants to devote his time to his family. With three young sons and a working wife, Doeschate wants a role where he can give his family enough time as well. Doeschate's family currently resides in London, despite the player being a Netherlands veteran. 

Hence, Doeschate's probability of re-joining KKR makes sense. He will have only two months of continuous travel. During the period of IPL, Doeshcate will be part of the Kolkata Knight Riders setup but can then spend enough time with his family. 

People like Ten Doeschate. He also gets along really well with Gambhir, and that equation matters. Gambhir has praised him publicly many times, and it was Gambhir who put his name forward to the BCCI when he became India head coach a couple of years back.

Now he’s back at KKR, and he’ll be working with Abhishek Nayar again. The two were assistants together with India, and before that they were in the same role at KKR too. Ten Doeschate and KKR have great history. He was part of the playing squad that won in 2012 and 2014, returned as fielding coach in 2022, and was there through 2024. That run included the title with Gambhir as mentor and Chandrakant Pandit as head coach.

He stepped away once Gambhir took the India job. With India, his time as assistant brought highs and lows. The team won the 2025 Asia Cup and retained the 2026 T20 World Cup. But in Tests it was tough. India lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, and at home they lost 3-0 to New Zealand and 2-0 to South Africa.
