Two people lost their lives and two others remain missing after four friends were swept away by the Yamuna River in East Delhi on Monday evening. Rescue teams continued an extensive search operation on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.
New Delhi, July 28, 2026: A day of recreation turned into a tragedy after four friends were swept away by the strong current of the Yamuna River in East Delhi on Monday evening, July 27. Two of them have been found dead, while rescue teams are continuing their search for the remaining two. Authorities have appealed to people to stay away from the river during the monsoon as water levels and currents remain dangerously high.
According to the Delhi Police, the incident took place near Madina Masjid on Zero Pusta Road under the Geeta Colony police station area. The four friends had reportedly gathered in Gandhi Nagar before heading to the Yamuna River for a swim. Shortly after entering the water, they were caught in the fast-flowing current and disappeared.
The Delhi Fire Services received information about the incident at around 7:20 pm on Monday, July 27. Rescue teams from the Geeta Colony and Laxmi Nagar fire stations, along with Delhi Police personnel and trained divers, rushed to the spot and immediately launched a search operation.
The first victim, identified as Sonu (40), was recovered from the river during the initial rescue operation on Monday night. However, poor visibility and darkness forced officials to suspend the search for a few hours.
The operation resumed early on Tuesday morning, July 28. At around 9:40 am, divers recovered the body of Rajan (32), confirming the death of two people. Search efforts are still underway to trace Hemant (27) and Sachin (35), who remain missing.
Rescue officials said the operation has been challenging due to the swollen river, strong currents and muddy water caused by continuous monsoon rains. Teams from the Delhi Fire Services and Delhi Police have been searching the riverbank and nearby stretches throughout the day.
A senior police official said, "Our rescue teams are continuing the search operation with the help of trained divers. Every possible effort is being made to locate the missing persons."
Following the incident, police have initiated an inquiry to determine the exact circumstances that led to the drowning. Officials also urged residents not to enter the Yamuna during the monsoon season, warning that sudden changes in water flow can prove fatal even for experienced swimmers.
The incident has left the families of the victims in deep shock, while local residents gathered along the riverbank as rescue operations continued. Authorities said the search will continue until the two missing men are located.
