“He's fearless youngster”: Shreyas Iyer praises Vaibhav Sooryavanshi after youngster scripts history against Zimbabwe
Vaibhav achieved the milestone at 15 years and 118 days of age, beating the record that was previously held by Gibraltar's Louis Bruce (16 years and 56 days).
Indian skipper Shreyas Iyer lauds rising batting superstar Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as a “fearless youngster” after the 15-year-old creates history by becoming the youngest batter to score a maiden T20I fifty. Vaibhav smashed 50 in 19 balls to lead India to a convincing seven-wicket victory against Zimbabwe in the first of the three T20Is in Harare.
India opted to bowl first and restricted the host at 125/7 in 20 overs, thanks to impressive bowling performances from Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav, who scalped two wickets each. Chasing a modest target of 126, the left-handed opener smashed four boundaries and as many as sixes at a strike rate of 263.16.
Speaking to broadcasters about Vaibhav’s first international fifty after the match, Iyer said (via Cricbuzz.com):
“Exceptional batting by him. He's fearless youngster, and the way he approached this innings was phenomenal. So, yeah, I think he's played here before, so he's got a fair idea about how the wickets are. He's got 175, I guess, in the under-19 final, so definitely possesses immense confidence when he steps onto the field. So, good to see it today. Good start to the series.”
Vaibhav achieved the milestone at 15 years and 118 days of age, beating the record that was previously held by Gibraltar's Louis Bruce (16 years and 56 days).

With his 50 off 19 innings, the Bihar-born cricketer also broke the great Sachin Tendulkar’s record of becoming the youngest batter in men's international cricket history across formats to score a fifty. His maiden fifty came after three rather ordinary outings against England a few weeks ago.
India finally wins under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy
The emphatic T20I victory also marked the first win for India under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer, snapping an unwanted seven-match winless streak.
Iyer was appointed as the new captain of the India T20I team, but his tenure started with disappointment as the team lost a series against Ireland for the first time and then faced a heavy 4-0 defeat to England. He finally tasted the first victory as skipper and will look to end the tour on a high note.
The second and third T20I matches against Zimbabwe are set to be played on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, at the Harare Sports Club.
