BCCI Dismisses Rohit Sharma Retirement Reports Ahead of Lord's ODI
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has firmly denied reports that Rohit Sharma will retire after the third ODI against England at Lord's, calling the speculation baseless.
LONDON — The BCCI has moved to shut down speculation that Rohit Sharma will retire from international cricket after Sunday's series-deciding third ODI against England at Lord's, with board secretary Devajit Saikia issuing a firm on-record denial.
"There are a lot of speculations going on in media about Rohit Sharma's future. I want to firmly assert that there has been no such discussion that Rohit will be playing his last match at Lord's on Sunday," Saikia told ANI. He added that Rohit remains a regular member of India's ODI squad and will continue to represent the country "as long as he is in the scheme of things," stating explicitly that Lord's will not be his final appearance.
Where the Speculation Came From
Retirement talk gathered pace during the ongoing series after reports suggested India's selectors were preparing to move on from the 39-year-old ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup, with young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal reportedly next in line for an extended run. Rohit's struggles with the bat added fuel to the rumours — he managed just 11 runs in the series opener and followed it with a slow 26 off 47 balls in the second ODI at Cardiff, his slowest ODI innings among scores of 25-plus in his career.
The chatter intensified further with reports that Rohit's parents had arrived in London ahead of the Lord's match, which many took as a sign the game could be a farewell appearance.
Context: A Team Already in Transition
India handed the ODI captaincy to Shubman Gill last year, a move widely read as the start of a generational shift in the format ahead of the next World Cup. Rohit made his ODI debut against Ireland in Belfast in June 2007 and has already retired from both the T20I and Test formats, making the 50-over game his last remaining international format.
What Happens Next
Despite Saikia's denial, India's long-term succession planning remains an active talking point within the team management, with selectors expected to gradually blend younger players into the ODI setup over the next two years. For now, the board's position is unambiguous: Sunday's Lord's clash will not mark the end of Rohit Sharma's ODI career.
