Shreyas Iyer overtakes MS Dhoni in India's T20I record books: Here's why
Shreyas Iyer created a unique record after winning the toss against Zimbabwe, making it eight consecutive toss wins as India's T20I captain. He went past MS Dhoni to register the most successive toss wins by an India captain in men's T20Is.
Iyer has also become the first captain in men's T20I history to win the toss in each of his first eight matches in charge. While it is a remarkable statistical achievement, it will matter little if India fail to improve their results on the field.
India have suffered disappointing T20I series defeats to Ireland and England away from home in recent weeks, raising questions over the team's direction under the new captain. Those losses have increased the importance of the Zimbabwe series.
Winning the toss can offer an early advantage, but it does not decide matches. Iyer now has the chance to make a stronger statement by leading India to victories rather than collecting records.
With expectations rising, the focus has shifted from luck at the toss to decisions on the field. The Zimbabwe series gives Iyer an opportunity to answer those questions with results.
Most Consecutive Toss wins by an India captain in T20Is:
8* – Shreyas Iyer (Jun 2026 – Jul 2026)*
7 – MS Dhoni (May 2010 – Feb 2012)
6 – Virat Kohli (Aug 2019 – Dec 2019)
5 – Rohit Sharma (Feb 2020 – Feb 2022)
5 – MS Dhoni (Sep 2007)
