A New Era of Governance: UP to Replace Century-Old Capital Building with Grand Lotus-Inspired Legislative Complex.
The Uttar Pradesh government is set to construct a massive, state-of-the-art Vidhan Bhawan complex in Lucknow. Designed in the unique shape of a blooming lotus flower, the landmark ₹5,200 crore project will be developed across a sprawling 200-acre site at Sahara Shahar in Gomti Nagar. Construction is slated to begin early next year, creating a future-ready infrastructure hub capable of accommodating up to 700 legislators.
Marking a monumental transition in the state’s political history, Uttar Pradesh is gearing up to shift its legislative operations from its historic British-era building to an iconic, lotus-shaped Vidhan Bhawan. The final architectural model for the project has been virtually approved, and the proposal has been officially submitted to the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA).
The Grand Architecture: A Blooming Lotus:- Awanish K. Awasthi, advisor to UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, shared initial concept renderings of the upcoming masterpiece. When viewed from above, the main building complex will perfectly resemble the petals of a blooming lotus flower. The central dome structure will host the core proceedings of both houses, while outward-extending wing petals will house administrative offices, a state-of-the-art library, digital committee meeting halls, and research centers. Designers note that the framework blends modern architectural elements with deeply rooted Indian cultural motifs.
Massive Capacity Upgrades for Future Delimitation:- The ₹5,200 crore legislative complex has been intentionally conceptualized to remain future-proof for the next 100 years. This long-term approach accommodates the anticipated surge in legislative seats following the upcoming national delimitation exercise. While the current historic house accommodates 403 members, the new world-class campus layout will feature:A 700-Seat Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly Hall)A 200-Seat Vidhan Parishad (Legislative Council Hall)A 1,000-Seat Joint Session Hall for mega-state events and combined addresses.Expanded Parking facilities engineered to house over 5,000 vehicles comfortably.
Integrated Political Township:- The mega-project will not be a singular corporate office. Spread over nearly 200 to 245 acres of prime land in Gomti Nagar, the comprehensive master plan integrates a self-contained administrative ecosystem. The campus layout includes a brand-new modern secretariat complex, an updated Chief Minister's official residence, high-tech secure VVIP administrative blocks, specialized hostels for MLAs, and dedicated residential grids for legislative staff.
The state budget has already allocated ₹100 crore for final blueprint completions, with actual foundation work and physical excavations scheduled to take off across early 2027. While critics argue over public funding priorities, the state government maintains that this iconic infrastructure project marks a vital leap forward for the modernization of regional governance.
