High-Stakes Clash Erupts Over Alleged Student 'Abductions' in Prayagraj; Police Dismiss Claims, Identify Arrested Individuals as Outsiders.

Prayagraj, July 28, 2026 — A fierce political battle has broken out in Uttar Pradesh following explosive allegations by Samajwadi Party (SP) President Akhilesh Yadav, who claimed that multiple students have been covertly "abducted" by state police in Prayagraj. The state administration and local law enforcement have vehemently refuted the allegations, labeling the arrested individuals as violent miscreants rather than student protesters.

Yadav Alleges Retaliatory Police 'Abductions' - Speaking out against the action, Akhilesh Yadav stated that a special unit of the Uttar Pradesh Police had been tracking and picking up youth in an SUV operating without registration plates.Yadav tied the detentions to recent massive protests over the NEET examination. He accused the government of violating its formal assurance that no legal actions or retaliatory FIRs would be pursued against the agitating student community.

"When the Central government had promised that no action would be taken against any student, then on whose orders is such deceit taking place?" Yadav asked in a public statement, demanding the immediate suspension of the officers involved and a swift judicial intervention to protect the lives of those detained.

Authorities Dismiss Claims: 'They Are Not Students' - The Prayagraj police completely dismissed Yadav's narrative of an illegal crackdown on the student body. Officials explained that their intervention was strictly a law-and-order response to targeted vandalism that took place during a demonstration. According to the police, separate First Information Reports (FIRs) had been lodged at the Civil Lines police station after protesters attacked and heavily damaged two SUVs alongside other public and private properties.

Vidyut Goyal, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) for Civil Lines, clarified that investigators utilized extensive CCTV security feeds to single out the perpetrators."We have identified 10 people through CCTV footage and arrested them," ACP Goyal stated to reporters, firmly drawing a line between genuine agitators and external rioters. "They were not at all students; some anti-social elements entered the students' protest, got involved in violence and damaged property."

Escalating Political Standoff - The dispute intensifies an ongoing national debate regarding police handling of youth demonstrations. While the opposition accuses the ruling administration of employing strong-arm tactics and intimidation to muzzle dissent, the government asserts that it is simply enforcing legal consequences against individuals exploiting peaceful assemblies to orchestrate public disorder.
