Indian-Origin Muslim Mall Worker Stabbed in Motivated Utah Hate Crime
WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah— An Indian-origin kiosk manager is fighting for his life in a Salt Lake City hospital after being stabbed 15 times in a religiously motivated hate crime. The violent assault took place at the Valley Fair Mall on the afternoon of July 13, 2026, where a suspect, since detained, openly admitted to police that he launched the attack with the explicit intent to murder Muslims.
The victim, identified as Syed Sohail Uddin, was working at a jewelry kiosk when he was approached by 48-year-old Peter Michael Larsen. According to a police booking affidavit and statements from the victim's colleagues, Larsen began interrogating Uddin about his background, asking for his name, his country of origin, and whether he was a practicing Muslim.
Upon Uddin confirming both his Indian origin and his Islamic faith, Larsen requested a bottle of water. As the victim turned his back to retrieve it, Larsen brandished a knife and began stabbing him repeatedly.
The attack was stopped by the rapid and courageous intervention of mall bystanders. Witnesses and coworkers, including Uddin’s colleague Luna Nunez, began throwing objects, including chairs and shoes, to distract the assailant. Several bystanders eventually tackled Larsen, wrestled the weapon from his hand, and pinned him to the ground until West Valley City police officers arrived.
First responders found Uddin bleeding profusely from extensive wounds across his torso and extremities. He was rushed to a nearby trauma center in critical condition. Friends have since launched a crowdfunding campaign to offset massive medical bills, noting that Uddin—the sole financial provider for his wife and two young children, remains hospitalized without health insurance following intensive surgeries on his hands, heart, and lungs.
Larsen was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on charges of attempted murder and carrying a prohibited dangerous weapon. In post-arrest interviews, Larsen exhibited no remorse, telling detectives that he "believes he is a catalyst and he intends to kill Muslims." Court records indicate Larsen has a lengthy history of violent crime; he was on active parole at the time of the stabbing, having been released in January 2025 after serving time for a 2022 incident in which he aimed a shotgun at police officers and threatened firefighters.
State prosecutors have successfully argued to hold Larsen without bail, warning that he poses an immediate and substantial threat to the public, citing his violent extremist ideology and documented references to pre-planned mass casualty events.
The attack has sent shockwaves through Utah’s religious minority communities. Imam Shuaib Din of the Utah Islamic Center, who is supporting the Uddin family, stated that while harassment against Muslims has ticked upward in recent years, this incident marks the most severe and violent targeted attack on a Muslim community member in the state's modern history.
National civil rights groups have also condemned the attack. In a statement, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) warned that persistent anti-immigrant and xenophobic rhetoric in political discourse directly translates into real-world violence, calling on community leaders to actively reject Islamophobia before more families are devastated.
