The India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) is set to come into force on July 15, marking a significant milestone in bilateral economic relations between the two countries. Indian government officials have described the agreement as one of the country's most ambitious and comprehensive free trade deals, aimed at expanding market access, boosting exports and strengthening long-term economic cooperation.

According to official statements, the agreement is expected to provide duty-free access for nearly 99% of Indian exports to the UK, benefiting key sectors such as textiles, leather, gems and jewellery, engineering goods, pharmaceuticals and food products. The pact is also expected to reduce trade barriers, improve investment opportunities and simplify customs procedures for businesses on both sides.

Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal described the agreement as a "gold standard" and a "first-of-its-kind" trade pact for India, saying it addresses both tariff and non-tariff barriers while protecting sensitive domestic sectors, including dairy, cereals, pulses, vegetables, smartphones and critical polymers.

A key feature of the agreement is the Double Contribution Convention (DCC), which exempts Indian professionals working in the United Kingdom for up to five years from paying social security contributions in the UK. Instead, they will continue contributing to India's social security system. The government estimates that the provision will benefit more than 75,000 Indian professionals and over 900 employers, while improving the competitiveness of India's services sector.

The trade agreement is also expected to make several imported British products, including premium automobiles and whisky, more competitive in the Indian market through phased tariff reductions. At the same time, Indian exporters are expected to gain improved access to one of the world's largest consumer markets, creating new opportunities for manufacturers and small businesses.

Negotiations for the agreement began in 2022 and concluded after multiple rounds of discussions. The pact was signed in July 2025 by India's Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and the UK's Secretary of State for Business and Trade Jonathan Reynolds in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Officials believe the agreement will strengthen bilateral trade, encourage investment, create employment opportunities and deepen economic cooperation between India and the United Kingdom. With the agreement taking effect from July 15, businesses on both sides are expected to begin benefiting from reduced tariffs, simplified trade procedures and improved market access under one of India's most comprehensive free trade agreements to date.
