Haldwani Cyber Fraud: Retired Clerk Swindled of ₹72.33 Lakh
Cyber criminals posing as senior NPCI verification officials defrauded a retired clerk in Haldwani out of ₹72.33 lakh under the pretext of a ₹1 crore insurance refund
Retired Clerk defrauded of Over Seventy Lakhs in Insurance Refund Scam
HALDWANI, India — A retired clerk residing in Haldwani was swindled out of ₹72.33 lakh in a highly sophisticated cyber fraud operation targeting his life savings. The scam unfolded over several weeks as digital fraudsters successfully impersonated top regulatory authorities to manipulate the victim with fictitious promises of a major insurance policy premium payout.
According to the official First Information Report (FIR) registered at the regional Cyber Police Station, the criminals initially contacted the pensioner claiming that he was legally entitled to an accumulated policy refund and bonus package valued at ₹1 crore. To secure the trust of the elderly victim, the coordinators of the fraud impersonated senior verification officials representing the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
Operating under this fabricated regulatory authority, the scammers gradually instructed the victim to execute multiple bank transfers. They claimed the transactions were mandatory upfront requirements to clear administrative hurdles, including processing fees, central tax clearances, and institutional documentation charges. Believing he was interacting with legitimate financial clearing houses, the clerk transferred a total sum of ₹72.33 lakh across successive transactions before realizing he was the target of an organized cyber network.
Upon the victim discovering the deception, a formal complaint was immediately brought to regional cyber forensics experts. A specialized cyber crime cell has now taken over the case, initiating digital tracking protocols to trace the complex web of beneficiary accounts and locate the source of the fraudulent calls.
Cyber security experts note that this high-value case represents a dangerous trend where digital syndicates purposefully target retirees. These individuals frequently possess significant lump-sum pension funds but may possess lower digital threat awareness, making them vulnerable to sophisticated social engineering tactics. Law enforcement authorities have issued a public advisory reiterating that official clearing houses like the NPCI never contact individuals directly to demand upfront banking transactions for processing refunds or bonuses.
