Japan inflation data released Thursday showed price growth accelerated in July, prompting Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to say on social media that a growing economy typically sees some level of price increases, according to Reuters. Takaichi said that compared with other countries experiencing sharp inflation acceleration, Japan's inflation rate remains at a lower level due to the effects of government policy.

According to data from Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, cited by Reuters, the Japan CPI July 2026 core index, which excludes fresh food, rose 1.8% year-on-year, while the overall index rose 1.9% year-on-year. Both figures accelerated from the previous month. The government revised the index's base year to 2025 from this July release, as it does every five years, adjusting the items and weightings used in the calculation.

Explaining the base-year revision, Takaichi reiterated her view that Japan's economy is in a transition toward a "growth-type economy" that has moved past its deflationary tendencies. She said the government's policy aims to achieve wage growth that exceeds price increases tied to economic growth, while simultaneously pursuing a strong economy and sustainable public finances, Reuters reported.

On interest rates, Takaichi said levels are ultimately determined by the market based on a range of factors, including economic and price conditions, monetary policy trends and the state of public finances. She referenced past annual economic and fiscal reports that suggested interest rates could broadly rise once an exit from deflation becomes certain. Takaichi said that, as in other advanced economies, Japan interest rates have been gradually rising.

The Japan core inflation reading of 1.8% and the broader consumer price data reflect a wider trend of accelerating price growth across the country's economy in 2026, according to the Reuters report. Japan's government has continued to frame this as part of a deliberate economic shift rather than a return to earlier deflationary conditions.

Official inflation and CPI methodology data is published by Japan's Statistics Bureau, while government statements on economic policy are available through the Prime Minister's Office of Japan.

The Japan economy 2026 outlook, as described by the prime minister, continues to center on balancing rising prices with wage growth and fiscal sustainability, though specific policy measures or a timeline for further steps were not detailed in the report.
