PM Modi, Amit Shah Honor Syama Prasad Mookerjee on 125th Birth Anniversary; Shah Targets Nehru Over 1950 Pact
PM Modi and Amit Shah pay tribute to Syama Prasad Mookerjee. Shah criticizes Nehru's 1950 pact and praises CM Suvendu Adhikari's rapid welfare rollout in Bengal.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah led the nation in paying rich tributes to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his 125th birth anniversary.
While the Prime Minister shared his message digitally amidst a major Southeast Asian diplomatic tour, Amit Shah arrived in Kolkata to honor the Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder on his home soil. Shah used the platform to sharply criticize India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, over the historic partition policies, while heavily praising the swift policy executions of West Bengal's new state government.
Modi's Tribute from Abroad
Embarking on a three-nation tour covering Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand, PM Modi took to social media to honor the "Bharat Kesari." He described Mookerjee as a unique nation-builder driven by a steadfast commitment to India's unity, dignity, and progress.
Modi highlighted Mookerjee's multifaceted legacy: as a forward-looking educationist, as India's first Industry Minister who laid the groundwork for industrial self-reliance, and as a humanitarian deeply empathetic to the suffering of citizens during the devastating Bengal famine.
Shah Attacks Nehru Over the Delhi Pact
Speaking at the Biswa Bangla Mela Prangan in Kolkata on Monday evening, Amit Shah directed his focus on the historical context of Mookerjee's resignation from the Nehru cabinet.
Shah pointed directly to the April 1950 Nehru-Liaquat Pact (Delhi Pact). He stated that after thoroughly studying the agreement, Mookerjee realized it entirely neglected the plight of Hindus living in Pakistan and the then-East Pakistan (now Bangladesh).
"The pact was one-sided," Shah remarked, noting that Mookerjee stepped down in protest. The Home Minister emphasized that 63 years later, the political movement Mookerjee founded is rectifying this historical oversight by actively granting citizenship through the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act).
Fulfilling Promises in Bengal
During his visit, Shah laid the foundation stone for a grand statue of Syama Prasad Mookerjee beside the massive artificial lake at Eco Park, New Town. He announced that the site will also house the new ‘Syama Prasad Mookerjee Institute,’ dedicated to national security research.
Shah extended strong congratulations to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, crediting him with transforming Bengal back into a center of nationalist inspiration. The Home Minister lauded the state government for its rapid implementation of massive welfare and security initiatives in a remarkably short time.
According to Shah, the new administration has already launched the Annapurna Yojana, Ujjwala 3.0, free bus transit for women and students, Lakhpati Didi, and Ayushman Bharat. He also highlighted infrastructural and security strides, including providing border land to the BSF for fencing, passing a strict anti-goon bill, initiating a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) committee, and forming the 'Durga Suraksha Squad' to ensure the safety of women.
Article 370 and an Undivided Vision
Connecting two major historical milestones, Shah noted the profound coincidence of Mookerjee’s 125th birth anniversary aligning with the 150th anniversary of the composition of Vande Mataram by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, calling them the shared wellsprings of India's cultural nationalism.
Reaffirming the central government's commitments, Shah stated that PM Modi has fulfilled Mookerjee's ultimate dream by abrogating Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. He also slammed the Congress party for never conducting an investigation into Mookerjee's "suspicious death" in a Kashmir jail during the Nehru era. The Home Minister concluded his address with a firm promise to secure the nation's borders and remove all illegal infiltrators from Indian soil.
