EC Announces July 24 Rajya Sabha Bypolls for 3 Bengal Seats; BJP Set for a Clean Sweep
The Election Commission schedules West Bengal Rajya Sabha bypolls for July 24. With the TMC divided, the BJP is poised to sweep all three vacant seats.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially set the wheels in motion for the Rajya Sabha by-elections to fill three vacant seats from West Bengal. With the official notification issued this Tuesday, the political math strongly indicates an effortless victory for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The seats fell empty in early June following a wave of resignations by Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs—Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, Sushmita Dev, and Prakash Chik Baraik—amidst deepening internal fractures following the party's recent electoral drubbing.

The Election Commission has laid out a swift timeline for the entire polling process:

The Numbers Game: Why the TMC is Backing Out
In the current West Bengal Legislative Assembly, the BJP holds a dominating presence with 208 MLAs. To secure a win, a Rajya Sabha candidate requires approximately 69 to 70 first-preference votes. Assuming no cross-voting disrupts their ranks, the saffron camp can comfortably elect three candidates.
On the other side of the aisle, the principal opposition is heavily divided. The TMC technically possesses 80 MLAs, but the party is split into factions. The Leader of the Opposition, Ritabrata Banerjee, who commands a faction of 65 MLAs, has already raised the white flag.
"Given the current numerical configuration in the assembly, the circumstances do not favor a TMC victory in any of the three seats. We do not have the necessary MLA count to field a candidate, so the question of contesting does not even arise," Banerjee conceded on Monday. Neither the 'Kalighat camp' nor the rebel faction possesses the magical 70-vote mark required to put up a fight.
Candidate Speculation and the NDA's Supermajority Push
While the BJP has yet to announce its final candidates, state party insiders suggest that the central parliamentary board makes the ultimate call. However, there is strong speculation that the BJP might reward one of the defected TMC MPs with a ticket. Sushmita Dev has already made her stance clear, publicly declaring her intent to work under the guidance of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
If the BJP successfully sweeps these three seats, its Rajya Sabha representation from West Bengal will double from three to six. On a national scale, this victory is monumental. It will push the BJP-led NDA coalition past the 150-member mark in the Upper House, placing them within striking distance of a two-thirds supermajority.
This absolute majority is precisely what the central government needs ahead of the Monsoon Session, slated to begin on July 20. Opposition parties within the 'INDIA' bloc anticipate that a supermajority will empower the government to smoothly pass major constitutional amendments, including the long-debated Delimitation Bill and the Women's Reservation Bill.
Silence on Other Pending Polls
While the ECI moved rapidly to fill the Rajya Sabha vacancies, the schedule for other crucial by-elections remains in limbo. The electoral body has not yet announced polling dates for the Rejinagar and Nandigram assembly constituencies. Furthermore, the Basirhat Lok Sabha seat has been lying vacant for over a year following the passing of Haji Nurul Islam, with no election timeline in sight.
