BCCI Breaks Silence on Rohit Sharma Retirement Speculation
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has directly addressed swirling retirement speculation around Rohit Sharma, confirming Sunday's Lord's ODI won't be his farewell.
NEW DELHI — After a day of mounting speculation, the BCCI has finally addressed the swirling rumours around Rohit Sharma's international future, with board secretary Devajit Saikia issuing a direct, on-record clarification.
"I want to firmly assert that there has been no such discussion that Rohit will be playing his last match at Lord's on Sunday," Saikia told PTI, pushing back on reports that had suggested the veteran opener's career was nearing its end.
Why the Rumours Started
The speculation built through the England ODI series, fuelled by reports that selectors were eyeing a shift toward younger players like Yashasvi Jaiswal ahead of the 2027 World Cup, as well as Rohit's underwhelming returns with the bat — scores of 11 and 26 in the first two matches. Reports that his parents had travelled to London added further weight to the farewell theory.
BCCI's Position
Saikia was unambiguous in shutting the speculation down, stating that Rohit remains a regular part of India's ODI setup and "will continue to represent the country as long as he is in the scheme of things." He confirmed there had been no internal discussion, official or otherwise, treating Lord's as a farewell fixture.
What It Means
The clarification puts an end, at least for now, to a news cycle that had gathered pace across Indian and international media through the week. Whether Rohit continues beyond this series remains an open question tied to form and selection over the next two years, but the BCCI's statement makes clear that Sunday's match at Lord's is not being treated as his last.
