Narmada Project Dispute Explodes: Congress Blasts Mohan Yadav Over Gujarat Deal
Narmada Project dispute deepens as Congress accuses MP CM Mohan Yadav of favoring Gujarat in a Rs 550 crore Sardar Sarovar compensation deal.
The Narmada Project dispute has taken a sharp political turn. Congress on Wednesday accused Chief Minister Mohan Yadav of surrendering Madhya Pradesh's interests to Gujarat. The anger follows a fresh pact signed a day earlier under Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
What Sparked the Narmada Project Dispute
Four states share the Narmada River. Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra reached an agreement this week.
The pact resolves decades-old issues around displacement and land compensation. Officials say flood-prone areas of the project had long awaited a settlement.
The Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India facilitated the talks between the states.
Mohan Yadav Accused of Favoring Gujarat Lobby
MP Congress president Jitu Patwari led the attack. He said Mohan Yadav compromised Madhya Pradesh's interests to please the Gujarat lobby.
The dispute centers on construction costs tied to the Sardar Sarovar Project and the Narmada Award.
Patwari reminded voters of the human cost. Several villages were submerged for the project. Millions of people were displaced from their land and forests.
"Instead of fighting for the state's rights, Mohan Yadav compromised with the Gujarat government," Patwari wrote on X.
Sardar Sarovar Compensation Cut to Rs 550 Crore
Madhya Pradesh had originally sought Rs 7,669 crore in compensation. This amount was tied to the Sardar Sarovar Dam Project.
Tuesday's agreement changed that equation entirely. Madhya Pradesh will now pay Rs 550 crore to Gujarat instead of receiving compensation.
Congress calls this a massive climbdown. The gap between the original demand and the final figure has fueled outrage across the state.
Water-Sharing Complaints Resurface in Narmada Project Dispute
Patwari raised a second grievance. The Narmada River originates in Madhya Pradesh and flows mostly through it.
Yet many pockets face irrigation and drinking water shortages. Farmers often go without adequate water. Canals fail to reach several villages.
He alleges the state's rightful share of water and resources gets diverted elsewhere. "Today, Mohan Yadav is bowing down to the Gujarat lobby," he added, claiming the compromise happened in front of Narendra Modi and Amit Shah.
