Strict Law Enforcement is the Only Priority, Violence a Thing of the Past: CM Suvendu Adhikari During Maiden Murshidabad Tour

BERHAMPORE — In his first official visit to the Murshidabad district since taking office, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari delivered a resolute message emphasizing the rule of law over political violence.

Addressing a administrative review meeting at Rabindra Sadan in Berhampore and a public rally at the Takipur High Madrasah school ground in Rejinagar on Friday, the Chief Minister warned public servants against financial irregularities and issued a veiled but sharp warning to local politicians notorious for provocative speeches.

Launch of Strict Anti-Goon Laws

The Chief Minister announced that a comprehensive anti-goon legislation will officially come into effect across the state starting next Monday.

"Incidents like burning down trains, torching public buses, or assaulting police personnel are now completely a thing of the past," Adhikari stated firmly. "We are executing stringent measures to ensure women's safety and curb cross-border trafficking. Legal trials will be expedited. The lawlessness previously witnessed in Shamserganj or Dhuliyan will not be tolerated. Strict action will follow immediately if anyone breaches the law."

Veiled Warning to Provocative Politicians

Taking a direct swipe at high-decibel political rhetoric without explicitly naming Am Janta Unnayan Party Chairman and local MLA Humayun Kabir, the Chief Minister slammed recent instigating remarks.

"There has been a lot of loud rhetoric here recently. If the police or the administration lapses anywhere, report it directly to me; I will take immediate action. But going to a police station and threatening administrative chaos, or boasting that you will overwhelm prisons beyond their capacity—please stop this empty rhetoric immediately," Adhikari warned.

Responding to the Chief Minister’s statements, MLA Humayun Kabir defended his position. "What is empty rhetoric about this? Does democracy not guarantee the right to free speech? When he was the Leader of the Opposition, he constantly leveled accusations against Mamata Banerjee and complained about having to approach the High Court just to hold rallies. Now that he is the Chief Minister, is he above everything? He is misusing his power over the local police and administration," Kabir countered.

Crackdown on Welfare Scams and Fake Documents

The Chief Minister revealed that intense document verification has exposed massive irregularities in various state-sponsored welfare schemes within the district, including Lakshmir Bhandar and minority scholarships.

"During the ongoing audits, we cross-referenced applicant details and discovered at least 600 fraudulent beneficiaries. Extensive corruption has taken place across various government programs in this district," Adhikari noted.

The state administration is actively scrutinizing beneficiary documentation by verifying KYC status and checking bank account configurations. This verification drive has already flagged 34 instances of forged birth certificates issued by local administrations.

Issuing a stern warning to corrupt bureaucrats, Adhikari stated, "The investigation is actively ongoing. If a Block Development Officer (BDO) is found complicit, they will go to jail. If a Block Medical Officer of Health (BMOH) is involved, they will lose their job. If our administration can suspend three senior IPS officers over the RG Kar case, no one is above the law. Give us two months; the verification process will be comprehensive, and strict legal action will be initiated against every single fraudulent beneficiary."

Infrastructure and Border Coordination

According to administrative sources, the state government has proposed a major budget allocation of Rs 3,600 crore to address the critical riverbank erosion plaguing the Murshidabad and Malda districts. The Chief Minister emphasized the necessity of implementing permanent engineering solutions to tackle the problem.

Furthermore, the administrative meeting highly prioritized border security and anti-infiltration measures. The Chief Minister directed senior police officials to significantly enhance active field coordination between the state police and the Border Security Force (BSF).

Addressing the absence of opposition MLAs and MPs at the review meeting, Adhikari clarified, "Today, only state minister Gouri Shanker Ghosh was present alongside regional party presidents who accompanied me to Rejinagar. None of them delivered speeches; they were observers. When a general all-party administrative assembly is formally called, all 22 district MLAs and four Members of Parliament will be duly invited."
